Frequently Asked Questions About Hand Pruners

What are hand pruners used for?

Hand pruners, also called pruning shears or secateurs, are used to trim small branches, stems, flowers, and woody plants. They're essential tools for pruning trees, shaping shrubs, maintaining gardens, and caring for nursery plants. Professional hand pruners provide precise cutting control for landscapers, growers, groundskeepers, and arborists.

What is the difference between bypass pruners and anvil pruners?

Bypass pruners have two blades that pass each other like scissors, producing clean, precise cuts that are ideal for live branches and green stems. Anvil pruners have a sharp blade that closes against a flat surface, making them useful for cutting dry or dead wood. Bypass pruning shears are generally preferred for routine plant maintenance and pruning living plants.

How thick of a branch can hand pruners cut?

Most hand pruners are designed to cut branches between 1/2" to 1" in diameter, depending on the tool's cut capacity and the hardness of the wood. Heavy-duty pruning shears may be able to handle larger branches, but when the job is too large for a hand pruner, use a loppers.

How do you clean and sharpen hand pruners?

Clean pruning shears after use to remove sap, dirt, and plant debris. Disinfect blades when needed to reduce the risk of spreading plant diseases. Sharpen cutting edges according to the manufacturer's instructions, lubricate moving parts, and inspect springs and hardware for wear. Regular maintenance helps professional hand pruners deliver clean cuts and dependable performance.
