Frequently Asked Questions About Loppers

What are loppers used for?

Loppers are long-handled pruning tools used to cut branches and woody stems that are too large for standard hand pruners. Their longer handles provide extra leverage and reach, making them useful for pruning trees, shrubs, orchards, landscapes, and more.

What is the difference between loppers and pruning shears?

The main difference between loppers and pruning shears, or hand pruners, is their size and cutting capacity. Hand pruners are compact, one-handed tools designed for smaller stems and branches. Loppers have long handles and are operated with two hands, providing more leverage for cutting thicker branches. For branches beyond your lopper's rated cutting capacity, a pruning saw may be a better choice.

What is the difference between bypass and anvil loppers?

Bypass loppers use blades that pass by each other like scissors, producing a clean, controlled cut. They are generally a good choice for pruning live or green branches. Anvil loppers use a cutting blade that closes against a flat surface, making them useful for tougher, dry, or dead wood.

What are the best loppers for cutting thick branches?

For cutting thick branches, you'll need the right combination of cutting capacity, blade strength, and handle length. Longer handles provide better leverage and a larger cutting capacity will help you slice through the branches easier. Gemplers Standard Lopper is a great choice, as well as the Corona High-Torque Lopper.

What are the best loppers for tree pruning?

Look for loppers that match the size and condition of the branches you want to cut. Bypass loppers are a popular option for clean cuts on live branches, and anvil and heavy-duty loppers are better for tough dead wood. Landscapers and grounds crew should also consider the blade type and weight of the tool to decide which is best for the job.
